Weakness and strength (2 August)

On Sunday evening we welcome Bishop Alison as we uphold St James in the Patronal Festival. Preparing my sermon has given me a great opportunity to look closely at the Diocesan Strategic Plan and to wonder about the next step on in our collective faith journey.

In considering the Gospel (found in Matthew 20: 20) I have connected with the theme of weakness and strength as it pertains to us. My comments explore the nature of paradox because it is in our weakness that we come to know God’s strength. I will paraphrase a question posed by Rev Michael Buckly to ordinands: “Are we weak enough to reach out for God’s strength, or do we assume that our own strength will lead us into the future?”
