Who do you say he is? (23 August)

Dear Friends,

This week’s gospel presents us with a question that Jesus put to the disciples: ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ (Matthew 16: 13). This question echoes through the ages and it is pertinent to each of us. Who do you say that Jesus is? We have the capacity to form an answer as we engage with the Trinity. That is how we learn and grow into our being in Christ. This is a life-long journey and one that constantly makes and re-makes us in our daily living. My sermon this week will look to spiritual writers who encourage us to participate in the mystery of God. It is not what we learn through theory or religious dogma that enables us to answer Jesus’ question; it is through participation that we may become aware of the mystery that is at the core of our being. The question ‘Who do you say I am?’ is open-ended. The answer can be a liberating force in our lives as we wrestle with a response. It shapes us in the here and now. May we each take the time to ponder his question deeply.
