An unexpected question (16 August)

Dear Friends,

This week brings us to a gospel that feels full of hope as it points us towards the joy of upcoming celebration of the Incarnation at Christmas (Luke 2:1–7). It feels like a breath of fresh air as we anticipate our emergence from the weight of winter. Mary’s ‘yes’ to the angel gives us pause to reflect on our own yes to partnering with God. We are invited to participate in the mysterious task of the creation of his Kingdom. Our pathway is rarely straightforward and at times we feel uncertainty, causing us to lose focus. Listening for the whisper of the Holy Spirit requires discernment, and we all need training in how to do that. My sermon will explore a creative reconstruction of Mary’s interaction with the angel. I hope that it prompts you to wonder about the nature of your willingness to respond when you become aware of an unexpected question from God.
