Total trust (26 October)

This week’s gospel (Luke Chapter 18, 15–30) highlights the necessity of a childlike, dependent faith in order to enter the Kingdom of God, contrasted with the rich young ruler’s reliance on his wealth. Developing the total trust and dependence of an infant, and letting go of worldly possessions, pride, and understanding is challenging because it is countercultural. My sermon this week will dig deeper into the understanding that our brokenness may in fact become a gift because God’s grace meets us there.

Contemporary society tells us to take control, in order to make our mark in the world. Jesus said the opposite. It is not the all-conquering warrior God of the book of Revelation that Jesus’ life exemplifies. It is the one who spoke words of love while hanging on the cross who calls us to healing.

We have a very busy few weeks on the horizon. On Sunday 2 November, Bishop Alison will join us for Confirmations at All Saints Patronal Festival. On Thursday 6 November there will be Baptisms at St James. On 9 November Canon Uncle Glenn Loughrey will be with us to preach and continue his conversation with us after lunch. Our friends from St Philip’s Collingwood will join us on that morning. God is busy in our parish!
