The Rich Fool (3 August)

This week’s gospel, known colloquially as the Rich Fool, gives us time to pause when we think on an untimely death. None of us want to focus on our mortality and we probably think that there is plenty of time left to us. Jesus’s story of the Rich Fool causes us to focus on our priorities. What or whom do we put first in our life? How important is prayer and developing our spiritual awareness? I am not one for pious words and biblical platitudes, but I do know when I am in need of drawing near God for consolation and solace. I took Communion to someone this week who said: “I needed that!” Oh that God’s Spirit would draw us ever nearer so that we have similar awareness of his call. This gospel story reminds us that we are easily diverted from the spiritual path. These are the themes I explore in this week’s sermon.

Our Patronal Festival at St James was a wonderful occasion. Bishop Alison said that one of the joys of Anglicanism is listening to a choir rehearse before a service. The choir did us proud! I offer sincere thanks to the musicians, singers and all involved in providing a lovely morning tea.
