The promises of God (19 October)

This week’s gospel (Luke Chapter 18, 1–14) calls us to an examination of certainty and the promises of God. On a simplistic level we might say that Christian doctrine is all we need in this life. On one view, orthodox interpretation of scripture provides all certainty. I listened to a horrifying lecture this week that examined Christian Nationalism explaining that the God revealed in the book of Revelation gives the true insight into the good life. Anything other is of Satan.

My sermon this week looks at the issue of finding God’s presence in uncertainty and brokenness. Elements of what I would term the reality of life. Complexity and discernment are challenging choices that call us to think, feel and struggle. Deep engagement with God calls us to venture into the unknown.
