The Gate (26 April)

After a deeply moving Triduum, we are anchored in the Easter season that continues to bless us with stories of the Resurrection. This week we return to Jesus’ teaching. We are called to reflect on Jesus as “the gate” (in John Chapter 10). This metaphor challenges our thinking. What does it mean to embrace this notion? It is really life-altering because it is counter cultural thinking. The contemporary world tells us that we are masters of our own destiny and if we listen to the correct influencers, we can shape the future that we want. The gospel message flies in the face of that proposition. Jesus is the influencer that we need. My sermon this week focuses on this theme: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” This abundant life may not be easy or straightforward, but what it reveals is that we will be accompanied by Jesus’ Spirit. Could there be any more life-giving experience?
