Real kingship (23 November)

Another busy week has passed, and we have arrived at Christ the King. What a joyous occasion to reflect on the Lord, who we hold as our pattern and King. I am constantly drawn to the train-wreck that is American politics, dominated by a would-be ‘king’. Threats, intimidation and all that works against personal freedom are his hallmarks. By contrast, we look to Jesus who said; ‘my kingdom is not of this world’. In every way Jesus encouraged the poor, the widow and the fatherless, all the while aiming to bring life-giving spirit to those in need. These are the characteristics that we celebrate on this Sunday. My sermon will focus on Jesus the King, who is with us at the altar in Communion.

I have spent time this week poring over the parish statistics in readiness for our Annual Meeting. Apart from doing my head in chasing numbers, it was salutary to see the number of times I have placed the Body of Christ in outstretched hands. I have done that over two thousand times in two churches, in homes and at hospitals. I am totally blessed to be your Vicar, and I love what I do every single day.
