Re-birth (22 March)

This week we have the joy of a Baptism at all Saints, a somewhat unusual event before the Easter season, but a welcome request. This week our gospel is the story of the raising of Lazarus (in John, Chapter 11). We know the story well and the theme of baptism and new birth link well with the notion of re-creation.

While we may not be lying in a tomb, we all know something of the heaviness of death – the burdens we carry, the ways we are bound by fear, injustice or regret. The geopolitical turmoil in our world is a source of sadness and despair for many. Baptism is our crossing from death to life, from what is broken to what is being renewed. We need the image and solace offered by the Baptism liturgy!
