Pausing at the Well (8 March)

This week’s Gospel passage (found in John Chapter 4) affords us the opportunity to see Jesus’ attitude to an outsider, as he meets the Samaritan woman at the well. He engages with her in a meaningful way that encourages her to reflect on her life experience. Jesus offers her the gift of living water. This is a theme that I explore in my sermon.

What an extraordinary Gospel for a week when we see violence and retribution writ large on the world stage. Jesus offers a blueprint for behaviour towards people of different cultures. Authentic engagement requires risk, time and effort. It is neither self-serving or demanding. It is invitational. We live in unsettling times but Jesus’ encouragement is to pause at the metaphoric well to draw deeply on his sustaining presence.
