Light in a chaotic world (25 January)

Dear Friends

Our world edges closer to chaos in so many ways as January draws to a close. Both on the domestic front and in the wider world, puffed-up self-interest demands our attention. In this week’s gospel Jesus quotes the prophet Isaiah who said that light would dawn on those who sat in the region of the shadow of death. That light is our legacy. My sermon this week will focus on the challenges we face as we strive to find a path illumined by Jesus’ light.

We celebrate this Sunday as Aboriginal Sunday, a practice that goes back to 1938, when Aboriginal leaders including William Cooper met for a Day of Mourning, seeking equality and full citizenship. It took another 30 years to achieve this. Australian Churches were asked to set aside the Sunday before Australia Day on January 26 as Aboriginal Sunday, a day for Christians to act in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to acknowledge injustices past and present.
