Hope and reflection (30 November)

Dear Friends,

Advent has arrived! Where did the year go? Each year I look at the theological themes prompted by this season and I feel overwhelmed. In the first week we are directed to end-times and we pray for peace. It feels timely to reflect on what has occurred over the year as November draws to a close. This parish has faced some sadness but we are reminded that the message of Advent is hope as we look to the future.

My sermon this week will focus on the story of God’s love for the world in the birth of Christ as a vulnerable baby. Jesus came to the world not just to folk who would call themselves Christians. Christ was born for all. In the hurly-burly of Christmas preparations, the church calls us to a season of reflection. We are encouraged to slow down. No easy task!

Please consider attending our Blue Christmas Service to be held at St James on 8 December at 7 PM. This is an occasion to prayerfully focus on personal experience and open our hearts to God. While the world around us seems focused on cheer, many are aware of sadness or loss or regret. Do come along and try something different.
