Are we listening? (15 March)

Dear Friends,

The days seem to be fleeting past. I find it difficult to pause and focus in on God in the moment, in ordinariness, as I’ve preached recently. Disciplined focus can be quite a challenge!

This week’s gospel on the man born blind (in John, Chapter 9) is a multilayered story. The narrative has a host of actions, but they all lean into the dynamic movement of darkness giving way to light. The echo of this story is that those who assume they can see and know what is right and just, may be those who have no insidht. At the end of the gospel passage, Jesus claims that the Pharisees are the people who sin. This is a salutary message for those who claim the moral high ground.

As our Lenten journey continues, we are all called to reflect on where we stand in relation to Jesus’ message. Our gospel story is ancient, the theme speaks to our contemporary experience. Are we listening to God’s message delivered via Jesus? He tells the Pharisees they are blind because of sin. How about you and me?
